Understand the significance of ‘news values’ and ‘news sense
News values are general guidelines or criteria which determine how much prominence a media outlet gives a news story. They explain why a story interests its audience; and how editors and other journalists decide that one piece of information is news while another is not. If you’re going to get the client into the media, you need to know what a reporter wants, you need to know what the client’s knowledge base and does that makes news. You need to breathe the language and mind-set of journalists’ so that you can provide the news content they require.
Knowing your audience is important for running a successful business. Selecting the right audience and understanding what makes them ticks them; is necessary to promote and sell your products to them. 3 categories of the audience are the lay audience, managerial audience, and expert audience.
Sub-editing is the responsibility of checking all of the written text of print content before it is released for publishing. Much like a copy editor, a sub-editor verifies any grammar, style, and spelling errors, as well as checks if all information is factually correct. Subs are required to understand the copyright and libel laws as they need to see to it that all work adheres to such before it reaches publishing. Some sub-editors have a part in layout design as well depending on the publication.
1. Find a good location.
Avoid Starbucks! It’s often easiest to suggest a centrally located corporate coffeeshop, but if there is any way you can interview in a place that has some relevance to the story or your subject, you’ll have much greater success. Not only because you’ll gain a further sense of context, but people are often more comfortable (and open) when they’re in a familiar place or what feels like “their territory.”
Ask to meet at your subject’s house, work, or the location of an incident relevant to the story. Even meeting at the interviewee’s favorite restaurant is more interesting than a Starbucks
2. Prepare your goals ahead of time.
Know what questions you’re going to ask and why you’re going to ask them. Heading to an interview with a sense of what you want to get out of it (a colorful re-enactment of an event, an on-the-record opinion on the issue you’re covering, general background, etc.) is critical to conducting a successful interview.
3. Write down your questions.
Be sure and bring prepared questions with you. I usually go into an interview with twice as many questions as I expect to ask. The security of knowing I’m not going to get stuck helps my confidence, and you never know what question will get you the information you’re really looking for.
4. Work on your flow.
This is probably the most challenging but also the most important interview skill you can develop. You want to strike a balance between a conversation (which helps make your subject feel comfortable and aids candor) and getting the job done. As your subject is answering your question, be thinking about what you’ll ask next and why.
5. Think about the medium.
Interviewing techniques definitely vary for different mediums. If you’re interviewing for audio or video, you want to ask two-part questions, which encourages subjects to talk for longer blocks of time.
6. Bring a buddy.
I find having a second person as a notetaker and extra set of ears can be very useful. If you don’t think another person will overwhelm or distract your subject (I find that pretty rare), it can be a lifesaver to have that second set of notes to check your quotes and information.
7. Avoid obsessing.
While good notes and recording are very important, you can do yourself a disservice by obsessing about recording every little detail of what your subject says. As you’re interviewing, you should be able to discern the gems from the chatter — focus on the quotes and info you know you’re going to use and make sure you get that right!
8. Be a little annoying.
Don’t be afraid to relentlessly revisit a question or topic that you feel hasn’t been properly addressed by the interviewee. Sometimes people need time to warm up to you or a topic, or will respond better if your question is worded differently. Keep trying.
9. Be a little sneaky.
Continue taking notes even after the interview is officially over. Sometimes people say the most revealing or intimate things when they feel they’re out of the “hot seat.” If they don’t say “off the record,” it’s all game.
10. Empower your subject.
A great question to ask if you don’t fully understand the perspective of your interviewee is, “What is your ideal solution/resolution?” Obviously this only works in certain circumstances, but when appropriate it can help clarify a person’s point of view or opinion.
11. Work them up.
Another great question is, “Why do you care about this issue?” This can be an effective way to get a strong and emotional quote about why the topic you’re covering is so important.
12. Endure awkward silences.
I know this is totally counter intuitive. My instinct is to keep chattering and asking questions to keep people feeling comfortable, but sometimes, especially when you’re dealing with sensitive subjects, you need to shut up and wait.
13. Ask for what you need.
Seriously, sometimes interviewees are frustrating not because they’re trying to bust your chops, but because they just don’t understand what you want from them. I find that many interview subjects get a kick out of having you “pull back the curtain” a little and tell them about your process.
A celebrity has famously gone into rehab. You need to get information about their time in the facility, because it will boost the readership / ratings and will demonstrate the point you are trying to make, perfectly.
When you arrive there, they say they will let you in to look at their facility as long as you don’t go to the celebs’ private room.
What would you do?
Walking around and try to walk pass in the front of the room and ask a question with the staff who work three.
What would you do in the same circumstances but your story is about non celebrities going into rehab?
Maybe spy on them, follow them where they go and what are they doing.
You are writing a story on a number of recent youth London stabbings. Heading up the campaign, on behalf of a charity, is a bereaved mother who lost her son to a stabbing. You have been instructed to ask her about the campaign and not emotional questions about her sons death.
Would you ask her?
Ask what is the next campaign, how you going to do it and do you have any plan for the next campaign.
What would you say?
I regret to what happened to your family.
You’re writing an interview based story on the life of a criminal? The criminal is renowned for drug crimes, committing fraud and violent crimes. After the interview, you read through the answers and see that the script glorifies this lifestyle and shows how the criminal becomes very rich and very powerful.
Would you still write the story?
I would say no because you don’t know what he is going to do to you and your family.
Would you write a story, that glorified the life of a serial killer?
Yes serial killer is very safe to write because at the end of the day they might sent the death penalty like TED BUNDY, or spend time in the prison forever
What about a rapist?
Yes my answer wold be the same with sarial killer
The Nottingham Goose Fair is an annual travelling funfair held at the Forest Recreation Ground in Nottingham, England, during the first week of October. Largely provided by travelling showmen, it is one of three established fairs in the United Kingdom to carry the name, the others being the smaller Goose Fair in Tavistock, Devon, and the even smaller Michaelmas Goose Fayre in Colyford, East Devon. Although it is now known for its fairground rides and attractions, the fair started as a livestock and trade event, with a reputation for its excellent cheese. The name “Goose Fair” is derived from the thousands of geese that were driven from the Lincolnshire fens in the East of England to be sold in Nottingham at the fair each year.
In 1284, a royal charter was granted by King Edward I that referred to city fairs in Nottingham although it is thought that a fair was already established in the city before then. Goose Fair was originally held for eight days starting on 21 September, but was moved to early October in 1752, when the Gregorian calendar was first adopted in Britain The fair was cancelled in 1646 due to an outbreak of the bubonic plague, and again during the two World Wars of the 20th century
For centuries, Goose Fair was held in Nottingham’s Old Market Square in the city centre, until it was moved to the Forest Recreation Ground in 1928, due to space limitations and planned redevelopment of the market square.
So exactly how is old is the bridge?
At the time it was the longest pre-stressed concrete bridge in the country, measuring 275ft.
With the addition of the west bridge, opened in 1972, the crossing became a dual-carriageway.
Clifton Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Trent and carrying the A52 road to the west of the city of Nottingham, in the county of Nottinghamshire, England.
It was completed and opened to traffic in March 1958 and is constructed of pre-stressed concrete. It is the next upstream road crossing from the older famous Trent Bridge. Clifton Bridge was initially built to relieve traffic pressures on Trent Bridge
The current west bridge over the Trent at Clifton Bridge includes a section of the former B680 (which followed the route into Nottingham now used by the A453). The 275 ft bridge was formally opened on 5 June 1958 by Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy. At the time it was the longest pre-stressed concrete bridge in the country.
With the addition of the east bridge the crossing became dual-carriageway as the A614 as part of a 1 1⁄4-mile (2.0 km) £3.2 million section (equivalent to £42,530,233 in 2019), opening in 1972. The eight lane bridge is a part of major regional route linking Derby and Grantham as well as serving local traffic in Nottingham The bridge is also open to segregated pedestrian and cycle traffic.
In 1994 a survey revealed corrosion damage to up to 25% of the pre-stressing wires. The bridge was strengthened by post-stressing with additional external cables.
In February 2020 during routine maintenance work, it was discovered that water damage had corroded steelwork under the bridge. This caused a temporary closure of the east bridge, which carries all eastbound traffic and one lane of westbound traffic, while the bridge was repaired
Intu Victoria Centre is a shopping centre in Nottingham, England, constructed between 1967 and 1972. Originally known simply as the Victoria Centre, it contains fashion and high street chain stores as well as cafes, restaurants, a health and fitness centre, and the Nottingham Victoria bus station. Over three million people live within a 45-minute drive of the centre.
The Victoria Centre stands on the site of the old Nottingham Victoria railway station, which was demolished in 1967. The clock tower and the former Victoria Station Hotel (now run by Hilton Hotels) were the only parts of the old station to survive. The shopping centre was built between 1967 and 1972 by Taylor Woodrow.
In 1970, the kinetic sculptor Rowland Emmett was commissioned to design and build a “water-powered” clock known as The Aqua Horological Tintinnabulatory The clock was installed in late 1972 and chimed on the hour and half-hour, playing “Gigue en Rondeau II” (1724) from Rameau’s “Pieces de Clavacin” Suite in E minor. This musical animated sculpture was originally located on the lower mall and was a popular meeting place. The clock was later modified to chime and play the music every fifteen minutes. In February 2014 the clock was dismantled and refurbished by engineer Pete Dexter and the Rowland Emmett Society. It was reassembled for exhibition in Millennium Point, Birmingham, during the summer of 2014 before being dismantled again and stored until December 2014. The parts were then transported back to Nottingham, where Dexter and Intu Victoria Centre staff carried out further refurbishment work. It was reassembled in its new location, at the north end of the upper mall. Its stature, colour scheme, and most of its original water features were restored. It was officially restarted on 17 June 2015. In 1997 the centre was extended to provide more retail space and allow the addition of a new anchor, House of Fraser. Following this the rest of the centre was refurbished.
